I had a small box from Suttons yesterday also. Partly as an
experiment in VERY late planting I ordered a few older things at
their astonishing prices...things that I genuinely do have good use
for, but could have easily picked up on trades....and they sent
astonishingly generous extras as they have been said to do.
Asheville winters don't seem like winter to me at all compared to
those of my mountain West upbringing. Even though we do get a spill
of icy continental air over the Great Smokies from time to time, our
winters are more often than not tempered by a flow of Gulf air.
There may not be many shirt-sleeve days in January, but there are
many light sweater ones. Planting bearded iris in mid October may be
sure death--but I do mean to find out. I am prepared to do the Chuck
Chapman thing and put a four-pound rock on the rhizomes if needed
should we get an inadequately mellowed Arctic blast. That does
happen on infrequent occasions.
