Yes Bill.. You do have mould spores forming. This happens to me when I put
down lucerne mulch too thickly and we get wet , humid conditions.Thickly
spread fertiliser , especially the organic pellet sort grows the most
spectacular mould. I dont use mulch around the bearded irises but do around
the Japanese....I have found that if I carefully dig it all back into the
soil, the plants dont seem to have shown any signs of suffering. However I
would try and remove the mould if it is on your bearded iris beds as I think
it could cause rot..I have also found huge clumps of toadstools appearing
out of my mould patches....they must like the heat that generates such
interesting mouldy growths.....In fact that is why you have the mould
forming...rich conditions: fertiliser: and water, creates a nice warm site
for mould to form....let the air get to it and it should break down better..
Hope this of some help....I am having trouble writing legible sentences
today, its taken me ages to write this,, Must have a fuzzy tired brain...Bye
for Now from Wendy Sargeant, Victoria , Australia...

Subject: [iris-talk] CULT: fertilizer/white fuzz
> Last week I mixed a fertilizer following the Pierson's post from May 7 of
this year. All seemed well until this morning (1 week later) when I found a
ring of white "fuzz" around all the plants where I had sprinkled the
fertilizer. I didn't get the chance to mix in the fertilizer with the
ground as it started raining as soon as I finished. The growth looks like
some type of mold spores. We are on the edge of wetlands and the grass is
almost always wet with morning dew. Can anyone help identify this and tell
me whether I have a problem on my hands? Thanks in advance.
