CULT: Sowing seeds in buried pots

I started digging an area to place the posts into the ground. I plan
to dig about 12" deep and backfill with several inches of gravel. How
about packing peanuts in place of gravel. I'm going to shore up the
sides with 2X6 lumber. I hope to have 4" of space on the top to fill
with oak leaves. I also plan to stuff leaves in between pots. I've
always sowed directly in the ground, but this year I have more seeds.
I want the control pots will allow. Am I starting to early. Should I
cover with Reemay?

Any suggestions or things that are not necessary are very welcome.
