Al, what happens if your trench fills with water? I don't know your average
rain fall, but we've just received 4 inches of rain in the last 2 days. If
I'd had a pot buried that deep, all my seed would have floated across the
lawn before the rain was over.
In the cases where I've buried pots, I leave the pots far enough out of the
soil, about 1 1/2 inches, so the pots can't be submerged in water. Still use
a layer of leaves/straw/pine needles over the pots--about a 4 inch layer.
Even a couple of coffee filters on top of the pot will help deter heaving of
the seed.
There was a discussion on burying pots, etc. that Paul Black was involved in
last winter, but I can't seem to find the right combination of words to pull
it up in the archives.
