The soil should be cool. I don't remember where you live but here (Kentucky)
I never plant before Thanksgiving, often during the week between Christmas
and New Years. I fill the pots with soil, usually in October, water well
several times and let them settle for a few weeks before planting. It
stabilizes the soil and keeps the seed from shifting position after they are
planted.
