Hello, Regina from Riverina, and welcome to Iris-talk! I am sure that our
Australian members, especially, will be able to supply you with lots of
useful information. However, perhaps I can provide some useful answers to
the specific questions you have posed. Decades ago, the Amercan Iris
Society (AIS) was by common consent designated as the worldwide registry
for rhizomatous irises. Nearly everyone who hybridizes and introduces
irises makes use of this registry. Therefore, an iris bred in Australia
travels under the same name in the USA as it does at home, and an American
iris bears the same name in Australia as it does here. In you search for
iris pictures on the web have you accessed the AIS website
(http://www.irises.org)? It has a plethora of links to other sites with
iris pictures, including the Historical Iris Preservation Society (HIPS)
website, which has many photos of the older varieties.
