Linda; This spring I had a very bad infestation of bacterial leaf
spot in a spring bloomer bed, which I mentioned in the forum. There
was a goodly loss of rhisomes. Most the rot I have encountered
results from bacterial leaf spot. I considered this to be my fault
for neglecting spring cleanup in this specific bed. I took everything
out that bed and it is fallow. All the iris I considered too far gone
went into the yard waste can. I cleaned all the remaining iris with
bleach and left to air dry on the chain link fence. Prior to planting
I soaked the rhisomes in Physan 20. Before planting I solarized the
new bed and watered with a terraclor soak. After planting I watered
in the iris with a Terraclor soak.
The iris rotting were Snowmound, Pink Fringe and Loudoun Lassie(a
local hybrid by George Crossman in western Loudoun). All of these
I've had for 10 to 15 years. I lost Allah completely, but it has been
questionable from the go. I planted two rhisonmes per cultivar. Pink
Fringe lost 1 of 2. SM and LL I lost the mother rhisomes in spite of
bacterial soap. There are increases coming up. These three cvs.
suffered the worst from the Bacterial leaf spot. The other 30 or so
iris, while infected, appear none the worst. I added maybe another 60
new iris, primarily from Calif. Only one of the new cvs suffered any
infection. That I cut back to green and soaked with bacterial soap.
It is firm with 2 small increases.
My conclusion is the incidence of rot seems to have carried from the
bacterial leaf spot for the rotted iris. The new bed is raised with a
mix of peat moss, pro mix and new soil I brought in.
As an aside, the losses are from older cvs well accustomed to the
local conditions.
