RE: Re: CULT: TB: REB: new rot

In the two year old beds I dug the past month here in the exceedingly
hot country of Phoenix, AZ, I found rot in only two clumps, Heartbreak
Hotel and Carnival Song.

I had grown Carnival Song about six years and had two clumps of it. One
in hard clay had small, healthy rhizomes. I took them to our rhizome
sale. The other in better soil was a big, vigorous clump. I had
harvested five seed pods from it this summer. I found three rhizomes
badly affected with rot and discarded them. Five big fat ones looked
healthy, but I soaked them in Clorox anyway, dried them and kept them
indoors. I gave three to my granddaughter; one rotted in its box. The
last one looked good till I planted it, but now it's rotted too. I'm
sad to have lost Carnival Song. Did producing all those seed pods
somehow weaken it?

Most of Sutton's irises do well here, but those in my guest bed were
attacked, Heartbreak Hotel very severely. Heartbreak Hotel was the only
one in one of my beds to be affected. With other reports of it rotting,
I'm afraid that it is one of the more sensitive ones.

Finally! Finally we have some cool weather. Maybe the irises and I
will all recover.
