Talkers,
There are people in iris land that report little or no rot. Maybe there is
something we can learn from the people that AREN'T having problems. Tell us
about your conditions and experiences!
Linda,
You've done a lot of RR. (Rot Research) Have you tried controlled tests in
which you do a soil test and then amend with lime? Maybe two clumps side by
side . . . one amended and one left as is? That would get as near the same
mini-climate as possible so that the only big variation would be the lime.
Several years ago, I identified several irises that had rot problems. Some
had rotted in my beds, and some were just reported to rot in my type of soil.
For varied reasons, I really wanted to grow these iris. I put approximately
1/2 cup of lime in the bottom of each planting hole. It seemed to work for
me, but I didn't keep a control clump.
I don't know if it would be enough to counteract the severe temperature
swings you experience . . . I don't remember the exact weather conditions
during my soil adjustment.
Anyone else had similar experiences?
