Hi Betty,
Both of the local clubs to which I belong provide instructions, advice, etc.,
on entering iris shows at our early spring meetings. When someone comes to
the show and needs help, my husband and I try to give it as much as we can, but
we are always hurrying to meet the entry deadline. Some members who enter
only a few specimens also try to help newcomers.
Shows are important to our members, but I don't think they are the most
important thing. We don't have garden clubs do arrangements for our shows; our
own members really like to enter arrangements. Members who don't have a lot of
stalks to enter as specimens can use what they have in arrangements and also
get stalks from those who have excess. This really worked well at our early
iris show this year. It was held at the place where we have our large iris
display garden and my husband picked armloads of SDBs for the arrangers to use.
We try to have programs at our meetings that will educate new members while
not being so repetitious that older members are bored.
