For what it's worth, these two irises tend to be different performers
here in my stressful rockpile garden and the blooms aren't similar.
MATRIX produces stalks more readily (everbloom), doesn't increase nearly
as well, stalks are considerably taller at their best but highly
variable (including branching), blooms have much less substance and are
smaller, plant isn't healthy enough to be reliable about carrying pods
to maturity (i.e., stalks rot). Doesn't reliably produce pollen. In the
garden, gives the impression of a cream colored self.
RENOWN will bloom off season, but tends to be earlier and later (so
better for you guys, worse for me - more likely to have cold injury to
bloom & stalks), stalks are short and branches stubby, but it's more
consistent, blooms seem larger and much wider compared to MATRIX, but I
haven't looked at them side by side. Readily fertile both ways, tho I
haven't gotten many seeds from crosses yet. Looks white in the garden.
<As to the performance of RENOWN & MATRIX in my garden, I'd have to go
on the
past 14 months and I'd say they are neck & neck.
RENOWN has produced 2
stalks (in the past 3 weeks) and MATRIX has produced
3 stalks, 1 that got frost
bit last year, and two that are out there now. No
spring bloom.>
