Planting an iris garden

Hi there!  
 
This is my first time planting an iris garden and I need some expert advice.  I inherited a few thousand iris rhizomes and began the journey of planting them.  I tilled about 2000 ft in gardens, placed lime, spread weed control, divided the bulbs and trimmed the stalks.  I started planting today and my garden looks like Charlie Brown himself stopped by to garden.  Is there a special way to plant these?  I divided the rhizomes that had multiplyed however I am left with long rhizomes that are not fitting well in the soil.  The stalks are leaning backwards in some cases.  What size should they be?  Thank you for any advice as I am struggling with the planting process.  Smiles to you
