RE: Planting an iris garden

Deb, where do you live? Here in Texas, we still have time to plant. Did you trim the foliage so that it would not overbalance the rhizome? Are there some roots that can help hold the plant in place? It doesn't matter if they are live roots or not. How deep did you plant them? Here, the top of the rhizome should be even with the top of the soil. In other words, more info is needed.

Hi there!

This is my first time planting an iris garden and I need some expert advice. I inherited a few thousand iris rhizomes and began the journey of planting them. I tilled about 2000 ft in gardens, placed lime, spread weed control, divided the bulbs and trimmed the stalks. I started planting today and my garden looks like Charlie Brown himself stopped by to garden. Is there a special way to plant these? I divided the rhizomes that had multiplyed however I am left with long rhizomes that are not fitting well in the soil. The stalks are leaning backwards in some cases. What size should they be? Thank you for any advice as I am struggling with the planting process. Smiles to you
