I believe that a study of the rebloom factor or factors would be
extremely interesting and valuable. I know almost nothing about
genetics, and the little I do know I don't understand. I do know though
that major complaint that people have about irises is that you have to
take care of them for a year to enjoy only a week or two of bloom. I
have read of hybridizers who thought that in a few years they would be
growing acres of rebloomers. It hasn't happened.
Linda, what do you mean by mistakes that confuse irises about their
blooming season? Would that mean that irises have some sort of
inhibiting factor that limits their bloom to a certain time of year that
when suppressed leads to rebloom?
I have also read that rebloomers have some sort of run away metabolism
that speeds up all their growth cycles. It seems that this is what I
have observed in my best rebloomers. They grow rampantly and bloom
heavily, often to the point of bloom-out.
I have been surprised to have seedlings of rebloomers that rebloom for
me when their parents don't. It's a very complex subject, but I believe
that future of Tall Bearded irises lies in developing more excellent and
reliable rebloomers.
