Re: Re: HYB: Genetics of Rebloom

Tom,
The name aphylla means 'leafless'. That's why it is called Iris aphylla
or I. aphylla. It is characteristic of this species and you are right,
some of ours have lost their foliage under extreme conditions.
Exceptionally hot weather or cold temperatures. We actually had a
friend dig up the rhizome (which was firm) and throw it away because he
thought it had died. Also been told that some have hoed them out because
they didn't see any fans. Oh well, we live and learn! Our aphyllas
have lost their foliage already. But they will bounce back in the
spring and bloom for us.
Most of the 3rd, 4th or more generations of breeding with TB's does
away with foliage loss. In the last 20 years we have developed so many
different lines from various (TB x I. aphylla X TB x I.aphylla)
seedlings that we only occasionally go back to the species. So our iris
tend to keep their foliage.
Vicki
