I put about a cup of alfalfa pellets, a cup of sand, and a few
tablespoons of balanced fertilizer on the spot where I'm going to plant
(sand is new this year) and turn the whole thing over to a depth of
about 8 or 12 inches, then set the plant in the middle of the dug area.
I usually don't add the sand mulch till after several weeks of watering
to let the soil finish 'rearranging' itself. Last year, I covered with
2 to 3 inches of sand. I add the mineral fertilizer because I have
gravelly soil in a high rainfall area that loses nutrients at a high
rate, and lush fall growth isn't a problem here usually.
