As a contrast to Linda's method of preparing to plant: In a plot, say roughly
10' x 30' I'll use two 50 lb. bags of alfalfabits (Pellets the size of the
eraser on a leadpencil -- not the chunks size of a finger-knuckle - and not
the meal, which blows in a breeze) -- maybe a bag of 5-5--5 or 5-10-10 or/and
0-46-0 (super-phosphate-whatever strength is available) -- the latter sort of
by gosh by golly -- just as the spirit moves me -- maybe a quart pail mixed
with Peters or some trace elements. The super is very good for irises -- all
that is tilled in before planting, and then very little needs to be done when
planting -- maybe a Tablespoon of pellets so they are more consentrated
------Oh, yes -- to the above before tilling, horse manure is added if
available --- some people prefer cow manure, saying there are fewer seeds
having been chewed twice -- also you can get it dehydrated or something -
where you get fertilizer -- Then the fun is in planting! Years ago I began
using sand late in the fall, putting a handful or so on the rhizomes to help
keeping them from heaving -- then in the Spring, if it hadn't washed off, I
just brushed it to the side and over the years that has been worked into the
soil. Just remember irises are tough and can stand a lot of mishandling
due inexperience and experimenting -- like you are SO careful with the first
baby, afraid it will break, etc -- but the 2nd one is more enjoyable because
you sort of know how to be relaxed! Rosalie, nr Baltimore - ryfigge@aol.com
