Dear Denise,
I am glad to hear from you!
I live in the very Southernmost part of the Sierra -- what are known as the
Tehachapis. To be more specific: about an hours drive East of Bakersfield
on Hwy. 58, in a mountain valley known as Walkers Basin (alt. 5500), about
half an hour South of Lake Isalbella.
From my first experiences with Iris, I would say this area is good for
them -- the thing, it seems, is to get lots of nutrients into the soil.
Then one gets the spectacular blooms.
Because of El Nino I had tons of water coming through this yard last winter
and only lost one: they seem awfully hardy.
I'm sure nothing can beat Oregon, however, for a gardener -- so much warmer,
if you are West of the Mountains, is it not?
Julia
