Okay, I admit it.
I have tell everyone how proud I am of how well my garden is coming along. That, and I haven't even posted a "token" message in a while.
I got waaaaaaay too many irises this year, and ran out of room for them fairly early in the year (June). So my parents showed me where I could dig a new garden. After 3 days of not being able to get the shovel blade more than 2 inches into the ground, I pretty much gave up and started digging somewhere else (Much more visible from the back door, as well). Anyway, 1/2 of this bed (which is approximately 30' x 4'-8'-- it varies) is mostly red clay, while the other half is mostly sand. So it has been a lot of *fun* digging... one second, the shovel is sinking to China, the next, you're doing your best imitation of a jackhammer.
Once I got all that done, I started adding compost, lava sand, and alfalfa pellets... I got the red clay 1/2 of the garden done yesterday, and I planted several. I finished it up today, planting another 120.
I can't take all the credit, though. My mom sat out there with my notebook and mapped out the garden as I planted. This explains why I'm now growing Mario Mahoney instead of Mary O. Mahoney. Why the second Thornbird I planted is referred to as Thornbird--seriously?, the third is referred to as Again, and the fourth is reffered to as "Nert!".
Springtime should be fun.
If you've made it this far, thanks for letting me ramble on and on...
Rusty
