Now that you have this years irises safely planted, you should go back 
to that first new bed and start picking away at it for next years 
planting. If you roughly chip the surface with a pick then pile the area 
up with compost, manure, etc. it should be much more workable next year, 
and you sound as if you will need the extra space.
Smithereens, BTW, are extremely fine, and move extremely fast, 
explaining why they are seldom seen, and are even difficult to capture 
with a high speed camera. :-)
