Lava sand is coarse sand, it increases drainage and has some trace minerals in it. You can get it at any "fine" nursery center.

I bought mine at a feed store. I love the way alfalfa smells, but I'm slightly allergic... whenever I handle the pellets, my hands start to burn. But after they've been wetted, it's fine. Go figure.
One quick thing... I must have forgotten to say that I'm only halfway finished planting, because I only finished tilling and adding soil amendments to one half of my new garden. I *will* post again when I'm truly finished.
