Not much except clean the whle bed up superbly in late winter and again in
early spring. All detritus must go. Cehck the Archives for discussion of the
issues. I'd use eggs as a search term.
Or.... if you want to experiment along with me you can try some dormant oil.
This product, which is an oil which is sprayed on while in suspension in
water, is used to smother the overwintering eggs of other insects such as
scale. I'm using Sunspray which is a light dormant oil. I intend to spray in
December and again in early March. You have to observe the temperture
requirements of the product.
HEAR ME CLEARLY I have no information whatsoever to suggest that this will be
effective. I have no informtion to assure me that the irises will not be
harmed. But I see little reason why they would be harmed when dormant, and I
intend to do this. If you have bad borer problems--which I do not but I am
interested in preventing in a neighborhood with many neglected irises in
overgrown conditions--anyway, if you have bad borer problems you may wish to
experiment, remembering that this is just an idea Anner had, and may be
crackpot indeed.
