Re: questions on late iris

From: Sing7178@aol.com

I have a number of racks with fluorescent lights attached to them. A friend
built them as a birthday present. I start alot of plants from seed....mostly
impatiens for all my friends....and columbine.

It was no effort at all to put the iris in pots and put them under these same
lights. It is about 60 degrees or so in this part of the basement. I put the
iris rz about 1 inch from the lights until they started to grow. Then slowly
raise the lights as they get bigger. The lights are very cool so I didn't
have to worry about burning the leaves. I did have a couple bloom during the
winter. That was really fun! I watered them about once a week...whenever the
dirt got really dry. I did make the mistake of underestimating how much they
would grow. I started some in 4 inch pots. They all had to be put into 1
gallon pots by the end of the winter.

A friend took some of these same iris and put them in her bay window.(Lots of
sun but also no heat. We live in Illinois so it was sub zero at times out
side) Did not repot into larger pots. This summer she set them out. Some
looked like they were dead...but, after a few weeks outside they took right
off. I think these iris were somewhat dormant and didn't know to grow until
they were put outside.

I didn't fertilize at all during the winter...nor when they were planted.
But, I only lost one over the winter.

Anymore questions? Feel free to type at me!
