We're a z4b garden so we've learned to cheat... Row covers (anything but plastic) are handy if irises arrive too early or too late. A 5 foot piece of PVC pipe bent to a "U" shape is held in position with short lengths of rebar and supports even the heaviest cover. Sides are weighted down or dug in to keep the cold out. Depending on thickness and type, temperatures can be raised as much as 8 degrees and double covers will also repel some of the moisture if you're working with beardeds. We've gained as much as a month on either side of the season and most covers will last at least two seasons even with hard use.
