Doreen, with all due respect I would not improvise on this. If you decide to
try some oil I strongly suggest you purchase a horticultural dormant oil and
use it according to directions on the label. It is inexpensive and homemade
potions are not always as benign as one would think. I would imagine that a
heavy oil could smother the leaves as well as any eggs.
Don't forget to check the Archives for many posts on the life cycle of the
borer. This is a subtle insect and you must plot its assassination with
cunning.
