Several years ago I went through Cooley's Catalogue, looking for the greenest Iris I could find--at that time there was listed four--I called and spoke with them, and they recommended Pride of Ireland as the greenest one--so I ordered a dozen of them--they were going to be planted at the Marcus Daly Mansion in Hamilton, a town south of here--Marcus Daly was the 'Copper King' and had a summer home there, and at one time owned about 90% of the race horses in the nation, summered them here, and his racing colors were green and yellow--we donated Pride of Ireland and Ola Kala--to be large plantings at the entrance of the drive to his mansion--they really looked good, and P of I was really green!!! I tried growing it in my own yard, and it was not as green as down there--so I think that the minerals in the soil have a lot to do with the intensity of certain colors.
Here I am growing both Kermit and Kiwi Slices and they both are green-without being very yellow.
I am in zone 3/4--and here the Iris do better if replanted by mid-August--Siberians and Spurias can be planted a bit later, but then must be mulched the first winter--A lot depends upon how much snow cover you have--lately we have very little snow-cover--l997 was an exception--but I grom beautiful TB's, and our club garden with little fall care and none during the winter has a survival rate of about 95 %--bearded varieties, and even higher for Siberians and Spurias--
Next year will start trying Louisianas and Japanese--
Carryl in western Montana--where we had snow down to the valley floor this morning!!!
Our club also donates Historic Iris to the mansion--Iris which were introduced at the time the mansion was occupied--
