TB: Brown Iris (was OT-BIO)

The heyday of the brown iris seems to have been the 1940's and '50's -
there were numerous introductions in that period from many of the the top
hybridizers of the day. Another good one from that era that is still
generally available is INCA CHIEF (Mitsch, '52). It is a lighter shade of
brown than ARGUS PHESANT.

This presents a bit of a conundrum; GINGERBREAD MAN (Bennett Jones, '69) is
indeed brown, but it is an SDB, not a TB. There is also a near
contemporary, GINGERBREAD CASTLE (Tompkins, '67) that is a brown TB.
Possibly a case of mislabeling?

A more recent brown iris that has done well for me is CABLE CAR (Luihn,
'82). As you mention, Vickie, brown iris are not that fashionable these
days, and so there are not too many new ones on the market.
