Chris, about 30 years ago, Ben Hagar told me he shaved the roots of all 
irises   when he planted them. I  thought at the time the motive was to 
eliminate some "germ" that invaded that way!  Also growth is more luxurious 
in Califl,  Don't you have to "plant" the pots in the ground to carry them 
over the winter?  And in a windy area, I would think it difficult for the 
irises to stay upright, unless the rhizomes were more underground than we 
usually plant them  -- and what happens when they heave?  Rosalie nr
