Now that is intereseting to find out from you that Hager used this
technique. To answer your questions;
Q: Don't you have to "plant" the pots in the ground to carry them over the
winter?
A: Nope, just slip them out of the pots once rooted and plunk the whole
thing into a suitable corresponding hole in the garden.
Q: And in a windy area, I would think it difficult for the irises to stay
upright, unless the rhizomes were more underground than we usually plant
them -- and what happens when they heave?
A: One would think this but they stay upright just fine for the short period
prior to when they start throwing new roots (which is relatively quickly).
Being potted while root development starts also means they can be stashed in
a sheltered spot if in a high wind area. Now here is one final nice point...
they do not heave with this method! Iris folks in the more northerly
climates can certainly appreciate that!
