I have been reading this thread with some interest and thought I would comment
on the question/answer above that Chris has mentioned. I don't remember which
member of our list brought this up over a year ago but Linda and I have been
using this method ever since and have found it to work very well. We use pieces
of aluminum wire about 10 to 12 inches long bent into the shape of an inverted
"U" to fit the rhizome then press into the ground to hold the rhizome in place
until the roots take hold. When we first started potting shaved rhizomes we did
have a problem with the iris falling over but the bent wire solved this problem.

Walter taught us how to plant iris using this shaved/potting method and we have
found it to be an excellent way to plant and take care of all our new iris.
Planting an iris with shaved roots only takes a few seconds and is very easy and
we have found that most of the rhizomes fill the pot with roots within a very
short period.
