Hi Jan, Colleen and listers
Full bloom just passing in our iris gardens in Sunraysia but still plenty
of spikes coming on mid to late season varieties but I have had to actually
spray for thrip a couple of times after finding so many empty sockets. They
can really ruin a good spike for such tiny little creatures. Seems that
thrip has been very widespread this year with infestations occuring after
those nasty hot northwind days.
At present we are caught up in the centenary celebrations of the Victorian
Rose Society and for the past few days the garden has been open for the
local Rose Festival and thankfully the iris were looking spectacular as
well. Speaking to visiting rosarianson a pre- celebration tour of rose
gardens in Victoria and South Australia at a dinner in Mildura last night
the "locals" ie the Australians on board have had some thrip even in city
rose gardens on similar hot windy days.
Some of the other guests from around the world will return home to UK and
Europe to put their roses to bed for the winter months. They will actually
lay them over and bury them in straw etc. We literally have to cut off buds
to prune our roses in Autumn so we have a only a couple of months without
rose blooms. Mutabilis blooms all year and the iris Lady Friend is a great
colour to grow alongside. Another delightful sight is the iris Planned
Treasure beside the David Austin rose Ellen.
We have chartered a coach for 30 and we head off to Melbourne for "Roseweek
99" in the Royal Exhibition Buidings but we have managed to include a visit
to the Victorian Iris Show on Sunday. Are any other Aussie listers going ?
Perhaps we'll see you there.
Dianne, Oz
