Are there Challenge trophies or ribbons at AIS shows? Retro Irises sound
like a good candidate for that.

Many of you know that I raise Fancy Rnglish Mice for show, and that there is
a good-sized circuit of such shows, especially in California and in the
Northeast. In addition to the standard show classes/sections and their
awards, there are always several Challenge Trophies, sponsored by members
trying to encourage the breeding of particular types or colors of mouse, for
the best exemplar of that type shown. For years I've sponsored a Best
English Longhair trophy at both local and National shows, to promote
development of quality longhaired mice. Other breeders have sponsored
trophies for Dutch mice (yes, marked like Dutch rabbits), for Curly-coats,
and so on.

These trophies really do have significant impact, as while the mice with
the singled-out attributes may win their class or section, it's rare for
them to get Best In Show, and breeders might not trouble to raise or exhibit
them if there were not this alternate payoff. Having said that, it's
important that the trophy *not* be awarded if there *are* no good exemplars
of that type at the show; I remember one new member who was given a Best
Dutch Mouse trophy in default for a "garden-variety" black-and-white
petstore mouse -- the guy crowed about it for months and offered its
"champion" children at inflated prices -- and nobody could convince him
otherwise, he had the trophy to prove it.

Do we have such awards in AIS, and if not how hard/costly would it be to
set them up? Mouse Challenge trophies cost the $15 purchase price, plus
another $10 or $20 in admin fees, then any cash amount (if any) the sponsor
wants to attach.

I have ten wonderful water colors (one five feet square) done by Nancy
Kestner. She has no problem painting ruffles. Or even horns, flounces
and
spoons. The paintings are done in botanical illustration style on white
backgrounds with great detail. That said, there is nothing wrong with
retro
hybridizing. Maybe we can come up with retro awards and retro ribbons
for
shows. Maybe there will be a best retro in show right beside the best
historical. This is after all a hobby and we can do what ever we want.
We
can't necessarily get everyone on our band wagon.
