Hello All,
As an avid fan of mail order, its a bit like a treasure search, you never
know what you are going to get, ie, the correct variety, plant size, healthy
stock. However, I must agree with Heather Pryor, regarding Bulb Express P/l,
Aus.Their bulbs are not cheap but you get what you pay for. I must say that
all their lilliums and daffs/narcs that I have bought over the years have
been excellent and what's more they supply correctly named bulbs.
I have had experience with many mail order nurseries and many are very good,
however you do need to shop around. Blue Dandenong Bulb Co are good,
Tessalars can be hit or miss, and I find they are expensive, Mr Norgate does
give extremely generous pieces of his perennials, but his names are a bit
creative, ie not what they are always meant to be. His latest selection of
JIs hoever, are true to name. Yippee.
Jan , I have found that my best method for mail order is to buy plants from
specialists, ie irises from iris growers ,perennials from perennial growers
and such. My specials come from small operators who grow for their own
enjoyment and are so sucessful with some species that they have ample to
sell. I must be lucky with all my selections of nurseries as I have never
been really burnt, only frustrated to find my order is not corrrectly named.
Everything I have recieved over the years has always grown on very well, I
just wish some would bloom. Don't give up on mail order, there are many good
operators around.Try black/white, no photo catalogues...then the colour
pictures wont upset you :)...I am being cheeky there......Regards, Wendy
