Lucy,
The DMA is only for junk mail sent via USPS and phone calls. It is actually
The Direct Marketing Association, and the address is:
Mail Preference Service
Direct Marketing Association
P. O. Box 9008
Farmingdale, NY 11735-9008
You can get a form from their web site, but you must still mail it in. The
web site with the info people will want is at:
http://www.the-dma.org/consumers/consumerassistance.html. It has the links
to the pages people will want there. Giving them your name and address does
not guarantee that you will no longer receive unsolicited mail or phone
calls, but it will stop that from those who are members of the Association.
Spam, however, is a whole different critter. There is no way to stop it for
sure. No oversight organization. Nothing really on the books legally to
stop it or punish those who utilize this form of marketing. By far, most of
it is a promotion of one scam or another, It goes through many hops to try
to hide the identity of the origin of the mail. When an ISP shuts down an
account for spamming, the spammer just goes elsewhere to ply his/her trade.
The best one can do, right now, is to report it to the originating ISP. If
you have the time, you can read the headers yourself and try to untangle
them, you can get a program that may do this for you, or you can use a web
site such as the aforementioned (by me) SpamCop to untangle the headers,
track the Spam and reports to ISPs for you and follow up on it. If people
put the heat on the spammers and get the ISPs to act quickly to shut them
down

With all the messages talking about Junk e-mail - Spam, I see the
message talking about a web site called "http://www.SPAMCOP.net"
Does this site work as a One Stop Get Off the junk e-mail list?
I ask this because for those who may not know, you can get off the
PHONE List and MAILING List PERMINATELY. You send a post card or
letter with your name, address and phone number to the following
address.
Direct Marketing Associates
PO Box 9014
Farmingdale, NY 11735-9014.
Put the words MAIL PREFERENCE and or PHONE PREFERENCE on the bottom
left corner of the envelope. Also say to PERMINATELY REMOVE from
list, other wise they only take you off for two years. This is the
Offical Clearing House to get off mail and phone list. The data came
from the Post Master, it is the same address for all states. It
takes six to eight weeks and you will see results.
