I think the crosses would have to be the late dwarfs
with the early TBs so the bloom times coincide (unless
frozen pollen is utilized).
I don't grow many IBs, about 40, and they did not
perform as well as the MTBs and TBs this year. I have
dug up and composted half of them. Shy bloomers = the
grave.
*These IBs bloomed have an exceptionally long bloom
period here: Gnu Rayz, Midsummer Night's Dream, Warm
Puppy, Maui Moonlight, Fresh Image, Chimera. In this
climate Lady Emma, which is classed as an MTB, starts
blooming with the Mid. SDBs and continues on thru the
IB season and early TB as well. Lady Emma looks like
an IB and I call her (privately) an IB. ;-)
Except for the longer and prolific bloomers listed
above plus some older ones (Hot Fudge, Candy Floss)
IBs have not done well in this location. And more to
the point, neither have dwarfs (!) and Siberians (with
the exception of tetraploids). I have kissed the MDBs
good bye and good riddance. If they don't bloom well,
they are out of here. No more coddling of any flower
or any cultivar. That is across the board - life is
too short.
My favorite IB is Halston who decided not to bloom at
all this year..one more year and it is out, too.

bloom at about the same day of the year, while others
bloom in relation to what the season is doing.Ê
Several folks have posted that cultivars bloom at
different
times, depending on climate (region of the world).Ê In
other words, bloom time seems to be 'fixed' for some
cultivars & not for others. <<<<
I am not into keeping records, except for the start of
bloom, for which I have records going back several
years and I did spend some time this summer retracing
the start of bloom. Weather seems to (gulp) have
little effect on the bloom time of irises grown here
(it does have consequences on the spring bulbs - due
to the vagaries of our long winter).
But when iris season starts, it seems to catch up real
quickly with other years, i.e. Siberians bloomed
within 2-5 days of other years no matter the winter.
AND the later bearded classes.TBs, BBs and MTBs, were
on time with the previous four years. I am not a
scientist and don't understand why but I just know it
is consistent from year to year.
I don't bother looking up pedigrees and such but I
find it interesting and informative that others are
searching for an explanation for the dreaded rot and
bloom. Having said that, I have 'noticed' with a nudge
from others that some 'lines' do not do well here.
Except for Protocol (IB), Keppel's along with Marky
Smith's are the biggest rotters here. After about two
years, the rots starts. Could it be the Gatty lines?
On the whole, Kasparek's along with Moores', Tasco's,
Craig's, Stahly's and some Schreiner's do the best
here. But I am always on the prowl for others that
don't rot and also bloom well (like the rest of the
gardening public). I have culled the worst rotters
out of my garden - maybe that is why I had no rot this
year (even after the spring torrents of rain - our
monsoon season). If they are dug up and gone, they
can't rot - simple reasoning makes for a happy
gardener.
From far northern New Hampshire,
Ellen (almost in the 30s last night - winter chill
this morning)
