Interesting, Patrick!
When I started hybridizing, I asked a few questions of dealers I was
ordering from, and was told by Terry Aitken that most crosses he
does, and others he's seen in pro beds, take on the terminal flower,
so make that your most valued cross.
That has proved true for me, without exception. Though I often try
the same cross with both top and second blooms if both are blooming
at the same time, and sometimes both have taken. This could be an
interesting thread!

the side branch can take up more moisture than the terminal,
therefore making the stigmatic lip more receptive to pollen for a
longer time than the terminal bud.
