What follows is in reference to my experience with TBs.
Sometimes the terminal has bloomed out while waiting for the
father to produce pollen, so the side blooms may be all you have to
work with to effect a particular cross you've been planning. Don't
hesitate to use side branches if the terminals are gone.
Occasionally, I have used one father on every bloom on a stalk.
I got as many as six takes once, with twin pods in the terminal. It is
not uncommon to get takes on the side branches and miss on the
terminals. You just have to keep going back to that one stalk
every day for several days to achieve such a feat of six pods on
a stalk. When they all take, you have to prop up the stalk.
I have also used different fathers for several blooms on the
same stalk. Each was tagged with a different color tag, and that
made the stalk look like a Christmas tree.
Other times I have used just one father on several stalks in a
clump.
Let's see. What other combinations are there?
Your chances of getting that hoped-for cross are greatly
increased when you use more than just the terminal bloom if
two flowers or more are open on the stalk the day you are out
daubing. Some of these will not take and some of the pods are
going to fall off, so if possible, spread the pollen as far as it will go
in that clump.
