This poor plant was the victim of some really extreme iris torture, even
for me.
Remember the beautiful photo I posted a couple of years ago of LOVE THE
SUN in bloom? It was a freshly purchased rhizome, from a 'dig as they
bloom' local vendor, sitting in a bucket in a plastic bag with some wet
sand and a brick on top of the rhizome to hold it steady.
It stayed there, in partial shade, most of the summer, with me pouring
out accumulating rainwater whenever I remembered (it usually rains about
4 inches/month). It deteriorated (!).
Finally, I got around to rescuing it late last year, planted the
remaining two small, wretched, half rotten fans out in the rebloomer
rows (more soil than gravel). One lived and is 'growing like mad'. The
other one next to it died. Most remarkable, they both were doing ok,
then one contracted soft rot after continuous rain this spring. Go
figure.
The third plant came from a club sale, is planted in the gravel rows.
The soil there is powder dry except where I've watered, and has been
that way off and on all summer. If LtS is one of those cultivars that
takes a while to grow long roots, it may do well there eventually,
especially if we get some rain after temps cool off.. Or if it needs
something other than rocks to grow on, it probably will just fade away.
Some do, some don't.
