My very limited experience this year was that none, yep that's zero 
of my crosses this year on the terminal but took.  All (whopping) 5 
of my pods were on the branch. However it should be stated that I had 
reserved the terminal bud for self crosses so this may play a 
signifigant part.

On the other hand I was thinking that the hybridyzer himself may play 
the most signifigant role.  Who among us is not champing at the bit 
to make this cross or that cross on a particular pod parent.  
Assuming the pollen is readily available I imagine that every 
hybridizer applys pollen to the terminal bud first(operating under 
the assumption that the terminal bud blooms first).  Now if that is a 
particularly important cross then the hybridizer is likely to repeat 
the cross on a secondary bud but may have insufficient pollen or 
anticipated crosses to be able to use later blooming buds regardless 
of where they are.  If a particular cultivar has several potential 
parent flowers it is also possible that the embryo of a seed pod of a 
favored cross on an early bud will be visible and 'prevent' the 
hybridizer from using later blooms as a parent.  

hmmm,  I think I've chased my tail so long I can't walk straight.  
Anyway, it could be just the hybridizer and not the plant that is 
causing this bud or that bud to be more prolific parents.
