Thank you for the explaination Linda. We abide by some of the same
garden rules "if you can't stand the conditions, then there is "no room"
for you in our garden"!! Our field of iris get no special treatment,
planted like corn in long rows, every plant gets the same amount of
water (irrigation pump in summer) and rain in whatever amount we are
blessed with be it "lots or little" in the winter. We did put 10
truckloads (spreader trucks) of composted matter out in August. Gordon
will also put out Surflan (sp) just before he waters for the first time
since planting. We used Ronstar (sp) in showgarden last year and it did
a great job till early summer, then the nutgrass (which hates competion
for space) and Johnson grass (roots like bamboo, long shoots travel far)
started up. We use a product called Manage for some of these pests. If
you have a farm chemical sales room near you they are a great assistance
in doing the leg work on finding out about new and old products that
will work on iris. You have to educate them on what an "iris" is but
from then on they are interested because it is something different then
what they usually have to work with. Even though they make there living
"selling" product we find they are very much in tune with "less is
better" when it comes to chemical applications. Can you all tell that we
are done filling orders and replant by the amount of time I have to
"vent". lorraine in California, zone 9.
