I've pretty much abandoned beds for irises, but here's what I used to
do. On a hand drawn outline of the general shape of the bed, circles
indicated the approximate location of each variety. Rather than try to
orient the map north and south, each bed had a landmark indicated on the
map. For example, an arrow on the left of the map pointing to <house>,
or <barn>. Once the circles were more or less positioned correctly on
the map, each circle was numbered sequentially, either by rows or
clockwise or whatever pattern seemed most useful for that particular
bed. For clarity, round beds might need to be numbered differently from
linear beds or curved beds. Sometimes, there were separate rows within
a bed, sometimes not.
I found it easier to name beds by location (i.e., FY=front yard) rather
than trying to keep track of numbered beds.
For greater precision, beds could be measured, laid out on graph paper,
with distances to each clump from points on the perimeter of the bed.
And it is always <very> helpful to have a wide angle photo of the bed in
bloom, even if not all clumps are blooming. I wish I had done this
every year of all my beds - would have greatly simplified <rescuing>
surviving cultivars after beds were abandoned and rhizomes had sometimes
migrated a bit from their original labels (assuming the labels were
still there and legible).
