Re: Questions

Hi Linda,

As you can't let your ground rest for a year add to it. The best way is to
have a soil test done. Our local Extension for the state does this for a
small fee. Then you know what you are working toward.

Here in Wisconsin I usually get two loads, 6 yards each of topsoil to add to
my Iris gardens. This does two things it keeps the bed raised and adds
nutrients to the soil for the Iris. I also Fertilize. I plant a Moss Rose
between every two Iris. I dig the hole to deep for the transplant wad of
dirt, put in couple of Tablespoons full (rough guess) of Fertilizer and then
a little dirt so the roots are not sitting right in the fertilizer and then
the transplant. The Moss Rose grows like a weed and the fertilizer leaches
out to the Iris. Not too much but enough so I had 150 bloomed in a two year
old bed of 200 clumps.

So, I plant my Iris 18" apart. So, if you think of a box, put a Iris in one
corner and then 18" to the right plant another. next row, plant an Iris
between the two and 18" away. So they are off set from one another. If you
off set they are less likely to grown together. Then you can redo the whole
thing in about 3 years.

Hope this helps.

our very small plot here in Whittier, California (20 feet by 30 feet). I
want to ask some of the group that grow a lot more irises than us if they
divide and replant every single year?
