Hi Lin,
So, this will be your first time digging/dividing irises. Lucky you. I
cannot remember the first time I did it, but I think it is a lot of fun.
I am not sure as to the exact reason someone felt you should let the ground
rest a year, and I do know a couple people who practice this method, but it is
not necessary after growing irises in them for only two years if you refresh
the soil with mulch and fertilizer before replanting. Don't stress out about
getting them replanted immediately...irises can stay out of the ground for a
month if stored in a cool / dry place.
There are a few clubs in S.California that you can go to and possibly join.
These are some very nice people and many are good friends of mine. I am sure
someone will chime in soon and give you information on meeting dates and
culture tips for digging and dividing and growing irises in your area.
Irises grow really well in your neck of the woods and reblooming irises do
exceptionally well. You may want to consider expanding your iris garden...
Right now the different iris clubs are having their club rhizome sales as
well, which gives you the perfect chance to pick up some of these rebloomers
fairly cheap.
Good luck and enjoy!

Subject: [iris] Questions
Hello,
This is our first time dividiing irises that we planted, 2 years ago, in
our very small plot here in Whittier, California (20 feet by 30 feet). I want
to ask some of the group that grow a lot more irises than us if they divide
and replant every single year?
I know someone did write to me and say try to let your ground rest for a
year but that really isn't an option for us right now.
Also, are there any members of the Southern California Iris Group out there?
When is the next meeting and where?
Thanks for any help I can get. Linda
Lin
