Let's add another question to the list of very good questions Michelle made: (See below)

My original post was to discern whether online is a real threat to print. I know that many people like myself would like to have both. As Harold pointed out the problem lies in whether something that is available online can muster the numbers of people necessary to keep the print publishing within a reasonable cost.Bob. I think you beat around the bush so many times that weeds will never grow there!
I guess I wonder how many people would use an online document but if it were not available would buy a printed version. Some people would never purchase a printed version and seem people would want both. The real question lies in those who would have purchased the printed matter but defer because it is now online.
Please be more specific because your question is way too general. This group is a small sample of your prospective market. I see no difference between asking what people think of a particular seedling and asking about what people think about a possible publication.
An Example:
How many people would be interested in a comprehensive 5 volume set of the Illustrated Iris Encyclopedia, each volume containing 500 pages including hundreds of pictures and illustrrations for only $249.99 with companion DVD.
How many people would be interested in the companion DVD only containing the complete set for 89.99
Please reply offline to Robert Pries.
Bargain prices at best but hopefully not too far off what it would take to break even.
How long does it take to make a copy of a DVD? (answer: minutes)
How long before pirated copies of the DVD kill off sales of the IIE?
These are not silly questions, but a very real problem.
I am not against having more online information. It is only because I convinced the AIS Board to allow all the R&Is up thru 2000 to be added to the irisregister database that we have (or will as soon as we can get it done) as much as we do.
There are some very real financial and fudiciary responsibilities at stake here.
