I apologize Bob, I didn't mean to trivialize the topic of theft of
material. I hadn't considered the issue of theft of images from your
book or of bits and pieces of text..
The "market" for stolen images on the web is pretty big, & as you say,
pretty thoughtless. Equivalent to the home burglary market for
handguns, jewelry and cameras. Sort of the issue of the whole house
being stolen (highly unlikely!) versus the more valuable contents.
I was thinking your concern was that the whole books would be pirated -
I assume that the market for such a stolen item wouldn't be very big,
but you make a good point - you don't have a very big market to start
with, so any theft has the potential to make a significant dent in your
sales & ability to publish.
I have published a lot of scientific papers, so am familiar with the
copyright issues you mention as well as the work involved in a book
series like yours.
