Re: REF: OT-HUMOR: Bob Pries book

Linda; I am not worried about SIGNAs encyclopedia being stolen exactly, but please dont be so naove. I have received stolen pictures myself. The internet community shares readily even when it is someone elses property they are sharing. I put a request out for pictures of a certain Iris. I got a bunch of pictures sent to me, but they had been taken from other peoples websites. Thankfully I recognized them because I had already gotten permission from the real owners. There is a website that I know that displays the prints out of Dykes book on Iris, even though these are still under copyright. I would love to use them in the encyclopedia but then I would be stealing. Since I have received pictures from many sources that would never grant their use on the internet, I am reluctant to endanger the special privileges I have, by reproducing the encyclopedia digitally. I would rather it be something special than have to take much of it away so that it could be distributed on DVD!
 . But
please dont tell me how few people would ever copy a book. They do it all the time. There is even talk that the movie industry will stop producing big budget pictures because so much of their profits are being siphoned off by pirates. If I cant get a minimum number of people who will purchase the books they will never be published. If I were rich I would pay for their publication regardless. But I have already spent a rather large amount assembling these books over the years and I can no longer afford there to be a continual drain of my resources. They will always be a net loss for me. You have no idea how much time it takes writng letters to secure permission to use material. It seems much of the internet world no longer cares about copyrights but it is impossible to publish a book without being concerned.

about break-ins and theft. When I asked my insurance agent at the local
Farm Bureau about insuring my computer, he looked at me like I had lost
my mind. He said, "Why would somebody steal it? No burglar in this
area would want it for themselves and who in the world could they sell
it to?"

Not to imply that nobody would want your book, Bob, it's just that I am
shaking my head at the idea that somebody would steal it, much less that
it would attract anybody at the cutting edge of breaking copy
protection. Similar to the concerns about "stealing" iris registration
data. Seems like nearly everybody who wants to use the online database
cheerfully pays for it.
