Hi,
If I plant late, after Labor Day I put a fist size
rock on top of the rhizome until spring. Some
years by collection of fist sized rocks gets
pretty low and other years not so bad.

To directly answer your question, in northwestern
Indiana I have planted into October with massive
heaving problems. Oct. 10 is the ave. first
frost. Planting by the end of August gives much
better results, but not perfect. I have used
coarse sand to cover fat rhizomes to keep from
heaving with success, but only a few trials.
Going to extremes, one year I didn't get all my
IBs in the ground before winter. They spent the
winter in our detached garage and were "mudded in"
as soon as the ground thawed. Over half of the
dozen bloomed that year!
Probably don't want to try this with a $50 TB.

| For those of you who garden in areas where frost
heave of newly
| planted rhizomes is a problem,
|
| how late before the ground freezes can you
usually safely plant? Six
| weeks?
|
| Back when the winters were colder here, the
ground wouldn't usually
| freeze until around Christmas. Sometimes
earlier. Not at all last
| winter.
