RE: CULT: question - frost heave

To weigh in on hard frosts. Answer: variable. We have not had a killing frost on
'all' the plants yet which is late for us. Our ground freezes hard usually by Halloween
but sometimes later. This year the foliage is late and don't know what that signifies
for us winter-wise. We are darn cold here at night.... 33 F (01 C) degrees a few times.
We also live in a relatively high altitude.

Dana,
In my part of northern Utah (Cache Valley), the first killing frost in Fall generally occurs between September 20 and October 10. This year, it was predicted to occur last Sunday night, but we dodged the bullet. The ground generally freezes hard around Thanksgiving (last 10 days of November). Typically, the really cold weather comes on quite abruptly - it can be relatively mild during the daytime in early November (but with frosty nights - big swings between day and night temperatures here because of the relatively high altitude and the (usually) clear skies).
