Guess I can be the spokesperson for zone 6, south central KS. We also have
first frost around Oct 15th but the ground doesn't freeze until much
later --Dec & Jan. Frost heave is a problem here especially in the very
early spring.
Some of us are now asking for July delivery of new rhizomes and potting
them up until Sept when the ground is cooler. We try to have all iris
planted by Sept 30.By that time new roots have formed which will help hold
them in the ground. Others have learned to 'pin' them down, or like me, I
walk thru the garden & gently step on those heaving up & out of the ground.
