This is a topic I have always been very curious about so, I did a search and
discovered that our ground temps only dropped below 40 @ 2" depth 25 times
last year, all in January and February. The ground temp @ 2" only dropped
below freezing twice last year. At 6" we dropped below 40 12 times and
never got below freezing.
So, if:
1. iris are not adversely affected until the soil temps drop below 40,
and if,
2. they need 6 weeks to settle in before that time, then we could plant
here until mid-November (on a normal year)
We have planted up until Halloween with little to no ill affects in years
gone by.
If spring growth is spurred by soil temps above 40 then that would explain
why our iris start to grow in February, which coincidentally is why we
frequently have late freeze damage.
Hmmm.very interesting.
